There are many different types of housing options available to seniors based on their preferences and needs. When choosing a residence or accommodation it is important to visit a number of locations to find a setting that best meets the needs of the future resident.
Depending on a client’s care needs, different accommodation settings are available to assist clients to live as independently as possible. Alberta Health Services can help clients determine the appropriate living setting based on an assessment through the Provincial Home Care program. Home Living is for people who live in their own home, apartment, condominium or in another independent living option. They are responsible for arranging any home care and support services they require.
Alberta Municipal Affairs administers the Seniors Self-Contained Housing Program. This program provides apartment type accommodation to low and moderate-income seniors who are functionally independent with or without the assistance of existing community based services. Supportive living combines accommodation services with other supports and care. It meets the needs of a wide-range of people, but not those who have highly complex and serious health care needs.
