Unique Homes provide seniors supportive living in lodge-type accommodations. Unique Homes are owned and or managed by non-profit organizations and do not qualify for assistance under the Nursing Home Act or the Alberta Housing Act (i.e., contract nursing homes and lodges managed by provincially legislated management bodies are ineligible for this program).
The province provides financial assistance under the Unique Homes Program to eligible private senior supportive living accommodations to assist with their operating deficits. Funding is provided to operators through a grant of $8.75 per eligible resident per day. Additional funding is provided to the operators for residents who require additional services from accommodation staff such as extra housekeeping, mobility assistance or special dietary needs through a grant of $3.70 per eligible resident per day. No new funding is available for this program.
