Fact: Alberta is Aging

In April 2011, there were about 410,000 seniors in Alberta.

By 2035, there will be more than 1,000,000 seniors in Alberta.

Most seniors are healthy and live independently in their own homes.

They contribute as employers, employees, mentors, volunteers, taxpayers, grandparents and community leaders.

Alberta’s aging population will present opportunities and challenges for:

• Governments
• Private Business
• Labour force
• Health care supports
• Transportation
• Non-profit sector
• Communities
• And Families

To successfully meet the needs of our aging population, the Government of Alberta has developed the Aging Population Policy Framework.

The Framework will support Alberta’s aging population by:

• Outlining the roles and responsibilities of governments, public and private organizations, communities and all Albertans.
• Providing these groups with a roadmap for future decisions about policies, programs and supports
• Supporting programs and services that are efficient, affordable and sustainable.

We all need to work together to make sure seniors have access to:

• Financial Supports
• Housing
• Continuing Care Services
• Health Related Supports
• Transportation and Accessibility
• Abuse-free Environments
• Supportive Communities
• Government Programs
