Seniors are Involved in their Communities

Statistics Canada estimates that 34% of Alberta’s seniors participated in some form of volunteer work in 2004. This was slightly higher than the national average for seniors of roughly 32%. (Note: Source: Statistics Canada, Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, 2004)

Although fewer Alberta seniors volunteered compared to other Albertans (approximately 34% of seniors versus 49% of other Albertans), seniors contributed more hours on average (254 hours per year versus 166 hours per year). (Note: Sample size limitations affect the reliability of this estimate.)

In 2004, an estimated 83% of Alberta seniors made financial donations to charities, donating an average annual amount of $563. (Note: Sample size limitations affect the reliability of this estimate.) This was slightly less than the national average for Canadian seniors (87%) of $572.
