Frequently Asked Questions

Supportive housing is mainly occupied by tenants who require support services to live independently in the community, where providers may receive funding for support services from other sources. We have several programs already providing supportive services:

Our objectives are as follows:

  • To ensure that Albertans have access to appropriate shelter and support services to maximize their independence and their self-reliance;
  • To ensure that programs and services are coordinated to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of resources;
  • To encourage that provincial assistance toward housing programs be delivered in the form of income support or, where appropriate, in the form of program support; and
  • To ensure that all levels of government, communities, non-profit agencies and business work collaboratively to provide effective and efficient housing solutions and administration.

Our implementation plan is as follows:

  • Develop a comprehensive supportive housing plan that addresses the needs of all individuals requiring supportive housing arrangements regardless of their current living conditions;
  • Review existing services to determine needs, gaps and potential solutions;
  • Identify the degree to which individuals requiring supportive living arrangements are receiving supports; what needs are or are not being met; costs of services; service providers; responsibility for service provision; and, which ministry should coordinate the housing and support services; and
  • Determine whether a portion of the social housing portfolio should be transferred to the supportive housing portfolio.
