Supportive Living Accommodation Standards

The Supportive Living Accommodation Standards are used by the Government of Alberta to monitor accommodations and accommodation services in supportive living facilities.

The standards are designed to support a safe and comfortable environment for Albertans in supportive living facilities by promoting their safety, security and quality of life. The standards are mandatory for all supportive living facilities for four or more people. A separate but similar set of Acrobat PDF Document accommodation standards apply to all long-term care facilities.

Background

The accommodation standards were introduced in May 2006 and began to be enforced in April 2007. Alberta Seniors and Community Supports is the provincial government department responsible for maintaining and enforcing the accommodation standards.

The accommodation standards are categorized into eight broad themes, with a set of detailed standards in each theme.

The accommodation standards were developed based on Acrobat PDF Document recommendations by the MLA Task Force on Continuing Care Health Service and Accommodation Standards, a Acrobat PDF Document report by the Auditor General and input from a variety of stakeholders, including Albertans and their families receiving continuing care services, the Link to External Site Alberta Senior Citizens' Housing Association, Link to External Site Alberta Continuing Care Association, public, private and voluntary supportive living and long-term care operators, regional health authorities, dietitians, seniors' lodge surveyors and Link to External Site Alberta Health and Wellness.
