You may be eligible to begin receiving optical benefits:

• on the day of your 65th birthday, OR
• if you are new to Alberta, after you have permanently resided in the province for three months, whichever is later.

A valid optical receipt must be provided before any request for benefits can be processed. The calculation of the benefit is based on income and the amount of the receipt.

Note:  Spouses or dependants, under 65 years of age, are not eligible for assistance from the Optical Assistance for Seniors program.

Optical benefits are retroactive for up to twelve months from your date of service.

You are no longer eligible to receive benefits:

• the first day of the month after you leave Alberta to reside permanently in another province or country or
• if you leave Alberta temporarily for longer than six months
