Each year, there are approximately 10,000 brain injuries in Alberta. Brain Injury Awareness Week, from May 30-June 7, is designed to raise awareness of the effects of brain injury and the supports available to assist brain injury survivors and their families.
"A brain injury can dramatically change a person’s life and result in survivors of brain injury facing many challenges on a daily basis," said Mary Anne Jablonski, Minister of Seniors and Community Supports. "I encourage Albertans to use Brain Injury Awareness Week as an opportunity to learn more about brain injury and to show their support to brain injury survivors."
Events will be held across the province to raise awareness of brain injuries and how to reduce the risk of these kinds of injuries. The organizations hosting the events are members of the Alberta Brain Injury Initiative, which is a network of supports and services that assists individuals with acquired brain injuries to live, work and participate in their communities.
In addition to the traditional one-week focus on Brain Injury Awareness, events this year will continue throughout June to further increase awareness of brain injuries.
