Brain Injury Awareness Week — June 1 - 7, 2008

You can help prevent brain injuries. Awareness week helps Albertans understand and prevent brain injuries.

Brain Injury Awareness Week is an opportunity for Albertans to think about brain injury awareness and prevention. By working together to educate Albertans and provide support to survivors and their families, we can prevent brain injuries and make a difference in the lives of those living with brain injuries.

The theme of Brain Injury Awareness Week, 'Realize the Impact,' highlights the wide-ranging effects of a brain injury including the impacts on survivors, families, caregivers, service providers, health professionals and the community-at-large.

Many of the estimated 10,000 brain injuries that occur in Alberta every year are preventable. Brain injuries can be prevented with measures such as wearing seatbelts, working safely at home and on the job and wearing bike helmets. Brain injuries may also occur due to stroke, aneurysm, drug overdose, lack of oxygen, diseases, infections or tumors. Following a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritional diet and regular exercise, can reduce your risk of a non-traumatic brain injury.

Alberta's Brain Injury Initiative was formed as a provincial network of individuals and organizations working together to address the needs of the brain injury community. Led by Alberta Seniors and Community Supports, the initiative assesses community needs and finds ways to facilitate partnerships that will ensure these needs are met over time.
