Minister's Seniors Service Awards

The Minister’s Seniors Service Awards recognize Albertans who volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of the province’s seniors. For the 2008 awards, 73 individuals and 20 organizations from across Alberta were nominated for their dedicated volunteer service to seniors.

Six individuals and two organizations were honoured with a Minister's Seniors Service Award on June 4 at a special ceremony at Link to External Site Government House in Edmonton:

  • Doreen Armstrong – Edmonton
  • Joan Furber – Fort McMurray
  • Shirley Geyer (posthumously) – Banff
  • Doreen Glanfield – Rimbey
  • Hank Heerema – Calgary
  • Diane Latham – Wabamun
  • Linking Generations – Sherwood Park
  • Sylvan Lake Seniors Association

More information on the awards:

A Nomination Review Committee, appointed by the Minister of Seniors and Community Supports, and chaired by George VanderBurg, Chair of the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta and MLA for Whitecourt-Ste. Anne, reviewed the nominations and forwarded recommendations to the Minister. The Minister then selected the final recipients.

Volunteer service in the nominations is evaluated based on:

  • Impact on seniors and community
  • Need for the service provided
  • Quality and diversity
  • Originality
