Deputy Minister of Seniors and Community Supports

Robert Bhatia was appointed Deputy Minister of Alberta Seniors and Community Supports on July 8, 2009. He previously served as the Deputy Minister of Alberta Finance and Enterprise, Finance, Government Services, and Revenue.

Since joining the Alberta public service in 1977, Mr. Bhatia has held a number of executive management positions with a wide range of economic, financial and administrative responsibilities. His knowledge and expertise are respected across Alberta and the rest of Canada.

Mr. Bhatia has extensive experience in economic and financial policy and strategy, tax administration, investment operations and financial sector regulation. He has had significant involvement in a broad range of policy areas, including pensions, housing, economic development and the Heritage Fund. In addition to his involvement in policy development, Mr. Bhatia also played a key role in a number of major corporate transactions, including the conversion of Alberta Government Telephones into Telus Corporation.

Born and raised in Alberta, Mr. Bhatia has a bachelor's degree in economics (honours) from the University of Alberta and a master's degree in economics from Queen's University.

Mr. Bhatia is married and has two children. He is a strong supporter of the arts and has served on the board of a professional theatre company. He also enjoys marathon running and golf.
