What is the Speech Generating Communication Devices Pilot Project?
Through the SGCD Pilot Project Albertans with severe communication disabilities are assisted in purchasing speech generating communication devices. These devices help people to live more independently and participate in their communities. Through this pilot project, eligible Albertans qualify for assistance for two types of devices: mid-tech devices and high-tech devices.
Who is eligible for this pilot project?
Albertans of all ages with a severe communication impairment and are unable to speak. The impairment must be severe enough that the person cannot speak or be understood by others. This may be due to a chronic condition such as cerebral palsy, an acquired condition such as a stroke or brain injury, or disease such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
How can I access help through this pilot project?
To be considered for assistance, you must be assessed at an AADL-recognized assessment centre.
Community agencies providing augmentative communication (AAC) supports can apply to be an assessment site for the mid-tech device category. Click here for a list of all recognized AADL assessment sites.
If you are already receiving assistance from a speech-language pathologist in your community, the assessment centre will work with your clinicians to arrange for an assessment. Contact your speech-language pathologist to arrange for an assessment.
