Authorizers

AADL will be hosting a new Authorizer Workshop on November 21, 2011. Please refer to the workshop schedule for locations and the authorizer application form for additional information.

How to Become an Authorizer

Health care professionals who want to become an approved Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) Authorizer must:

  1. Be a resident of Alberta.
  2. Be a qualified health professional and currently registered in good standing with active status with one of these professional associations:
    • Registered Nurse - College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta
    • Occupational Therapist - Alberta Association of Registered Occupational Therapists
    • Physical Therapist - College of Physical Therapists of Alberta
    • Speech Language Pathologist - Alberta College of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists
  3. Have a minimum of six months clinical experience. Exceptions may be allowed, with the prior approval of AADL.
  4. Be employed by Alberta Health Services. Exceptions may be allowed, with the prior approval of AADL. Please note:
    • Alberta Health Services facilities that contract with individuals/organizations to provide health services, including AADL assessments, must ensure contracts meet AADL Policies and Procedures.
    • Individuals not employed by Alberta Health Services must obtain prior approval from AADL.
  5. Not be employed in acute care facilities. Exceptions may be allowed, with the prior approval of AADL.
  6. Work a minimum of 0.4 FTE, with the expectation that the authorizer will meet minimum annual authorization activity. Exceptions may be allowed, with the prior approval of AADL.
  7. Not be in a position to directly or indirectly engage in the sale and supply of a program benefit. Health care professionals must disclose any potential conflict of interest to AADL for evaluation.
  8. Meet the entrance criteria of the specific AADL benefit they wish to authorize, when applicable, and possess the specialized training required to authorize specific AADL benefits, as noted in the benefit sections of the AADL program manual.

    Health care professionals may authorize AADL benefits as per the following list:

    • Registered Nurse
      • Bathing and toileting aids
      • Walking aids
      • Medical/surgical benefits
      • Lymphedema garments
      • Soft supports
      • Compression stockings
      • Burn scar garments
      • Mastectomy prosthesis
      • Large equipment-commodes, etc.
      • Large equipment-pediatric
      • Large equipment-beds
      • Large equipment-lifts, etc.
    • Occupational Therapist
      • Bathing and toileting aids
      • Walking aids
      • Lymphedema garments
      • Soft supports
      • Compression stockings
      • Burn scar garments
      • Large equipment-commodes, etc.
      • Large equipment-pediatric
      • Large equipment-beds
      • Large equipment-lifts, etc.
      • Wheelchairs
      • Wheelchair accessories
    • Physical Therapist
      • Bathing and toileting aids
      • Walking aids
      • Lymphedema garments
      • Soft supports
      • Compression stockings
      • Burn scar garments
      • Large equipment-commodes, etc.
      • Large equipment-pediatric
      • Large equipment-beds
      • Large equipment-lifts, etc.
      • Wheelchairs
      • Wheelchair accessories
    • Speech Language Pathologists
      • Laryngectomy and tracheal speaking valves
      • Electrolarynx

    Health care professionals who wish to authorize a benefit that is not on the list for their professional designation must obtain prior approval from AADL, and their supervisor must ensure the health care professional has sufficient training to provide the knowledge and skill necessary to authorize the benefits.

  9. Attend and complete the AADL Authorizer Orientation Workshop.

Please note that AADL, in partnership with Alberta Health Services Representatives, has the right to refuse to grant AADL Authorizer status.

Application Process and Form

If you meet the above criteria, complete the  application form and then submit it by fax or mail to the AADL office at least two weeks prior to the desired workshop date. Please ensure that both you and your supervisor sign the form confirming the information you have provided is correct. Incomplete forms cannot be processed.

Prior to attending a workshop, AADL strongly recommends that you read and review the AADL program manual.
