In 1992, the United Nations proclaimed December 3 as International Day of Disabled Persons. On December 18th of 2007 the International Day of Disabled Persons was renamed and is now the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Recognition of this day aims to increase awareness and understanding of persons with disabilities and the issues that impact their lives.
Albertans will recognize International Day of Persons with Disabilities in a variety of ways, including special ceremonies in Ft. McMurray, Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, and presentation of the Premier's Council Awards of Excellence.
