In 1992, the United Nations proclaimed December 3 as International Day of Disabled Persons. On December 18th of 2007 the International Day of Disabled Persons was renamed and is now the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Recognition of this day aims to increase awareness and understanding of persons with disabilities and the issues that impact their lives.
Premier's Council seeks opportunities to promote the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Alberta. Currently support is provided to organizing committees for International Day of Persons with Disabilities' ceremonies in Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. There are often occasions to present the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Awards at these events.
More information about International Day of Persons with Disabilities is available on the
United Nations' website.
