Safeguards for Vulnerable Adults

A safe and secure environment, where people are free from abuse and neglect, is necessary for well-being and quality of life. Alberta Seniors works to address the safety and security needs of adults who may be vulnerable to abuse and neglect, including persons with disabilities, seniors and people who require the assistance of a guardian to make personal decisions.

Accommodation Standards

Alberta Seniors is responsible for the monitoring and enforcement of accommodation standards for supportive living and long-term care settings. Complaints of non-compliance to the Supportive Living Accommodation Licensing Act, the accompanying regulation, the supportive living accommodation standards and/or the long-term care accommodation standards can be made to this line. The focus of the accommodation standards is accommodation or accommodation related services such as safety and security, meals, housekeeping or building maintenance.

Office of the Public Guardian

The Office of the Public Guardian provides guardianship services for adults who are unable to make personal decisions for themselves. The Office of the Public Guardian also provides education and support to help private guardians fulfill their role and duties. Information about personal directives, the role and responsibilities of an agent and other substitute decision-making matters is also provided. Under the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act, written complaints can be sent to a complaint officer when there are concerns regarding the actions of co-decision makers, guardians and/or trustees. The complaint officer can determine if the complaint meets the criteria for investigation.

Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD)

The Abuse Prevention and Response Protocol is a PDD provincial policy that addresses both the prevention of abuse and the response to any form of mistreatment toward an individual supported by the PDD program. Concerns of abuse or mistreatment should be reported to the service provider organization, the family who hires staff privately or the nearest PDD Community Board.

Protection for Persons in Care

Protection for Persons in Care addresses reports of abuse involving adults receiving care or support services from government-funded service providers. This includes settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, mental health facilities, group homes, shelters, addictions and mental health treatment centres, and other supportive living settings. The Protection for Persons in Care Act requires that abuse be reported to the police or to Protection for Persons in Care.
