Assessment
Individuals with severe communication impairments must be assessed at recognized AADL assessment sites. Assessments must be done to determine the most appropriate communication system.
Assessments are made by registered speech-language pathologists (S-LP) from recognized AADL service centres or agencies.
An Occupational Therapist (OT) from the service centre or agency will participate in assessments for those with access needs and require equipment such as switches and mounting equipment to use with the communication device.
Assessments must include opportunities for a trial use of the communication device in the person’s home before the device is authorized. Trials are to ensure that the person is able to use the communication device effectively and independently. During the device trial, the assessing clinicians will gather data to demonstrate effective device use.
Ownership
Upon successful completion of the assessment, device trial and review process, AADL will purchase the device on behalf of the person who will use the device. The person can keep the device as long as it is needed. When the device is no longer needed it must be returned to the assessment centre.
A person whose communication needs have changed is eligible for a replacement device following re-assessment and trial to ensure that the replacement device will support the person’s change in circumstances.
